We have been impressed with the Avantt in the 5-weight, and the 4-weight is another terrific rod. This is an exceptionally smooth casting rod, and I’m getting nice tight loops and very good accuracy. We have awarded scores emphasizing the lowest repair charges and the quickest repair turn around. We think that the best are the flexible nickel/titanium single foot and snake guides, but these are much more expensive than the heaver, hard chrome versions. Hardy Zephrus FWS Rod - 8'6" 4wt 4 Piece at Glen's Feels great out long! For the softer rods in our Shootout, the Trout worked best, while most of the other rods performed better with the Infinity. Those rods are both a lot lighter in swing weight and faster in action. In the past we have used the Scientific Anglers lines since they shoot better and hold up longer than any other line we have found. Here the lack of butt power hurts a bit but it was better than the Shadow out long and matched the Scott G-Series. I could really notice the heavy swing weight in my hand. The H3F rated slightly higher over all, but the Asquith had a lot more butt and mid-section power to blast out long casts. Some good alignment dots and lines are used. This is especially important for 3 and 4-weight rods, when you are often using very light 5X, 6x and 7X tippets while fishing small dries, emergers and spinners. The lock rings were a little harder than most to grip and tighten. But superior craftsmanship commands a much higher price! Performance at 60 feet: 9.0 points out of 10. I enjoyed the #4 quite a bit but as I really got intimate with it, I learned its slight hinge in the upper mid taper. I took a look at a St Croix fly rod in a local store that was made in Mexico but found that the handle was too large in diameter for my liking. The softness didn’t allow me to make good hard backcasts in an effort to form tight loops. There is no accounting for personal tastes, but you seem to be way, way out there like pluto man. What is a cheap rod like this doing up here with all the far higher priced rods, many of which cost $700 more? If you are a Scott fan and want a rod for fishing at short to medium distances, you’ll likely prefer this rod over the Radian. Great rods don’t make great casters, but there is no doubt that they will improve any angler’s casting skills and his ability to catch fish. The blank is graphite gray and follows Scott’s practice of sanding the blank only lightly and allowing the tape marks to remain. I thought the Zephrus steamrolled the other rods in terms of being the best all-around 4-weight. To ignore my advice is to risk being carried away on a hot Zephrus, and found without a Pulse. This rod has good power in the butt and mid sections and a softer tip, much like the action on some of our top rated rods. The quality of epoxy coatings on the guide wraps was excellent and almost the equal of the T&T rods. When we had the opportunity to cast each rod in the new R8 Salt series, we were immediately impressed by Sage’s commitment to developing a salt-specific series that is enjoyable to cast for the average angler.
